HOLY SHIT VOLOBLOG

So my hoarder grandpa was giving us a tour of his awesome machine shop, we were on the mezzanine (new favorite word btw) and I noticed a pile of Commodore 64's. He offered one to my dad, and my dad was like, thats cool I would but I have so many projects right now, so I was like ::eyes:: ::eyes:: ::eyes:: I guess the top one was broken ("ɴᴏ ɢᴏᴏᴅ"), so we went deeper, the next one was "ᴏᴋ", so it was taken by me. At the bottom there was also a Commodore 128 (SUBTLE FORESHADOWING?), which I believe was finally the end of my grandfather's rich bounty.

So yea I have this Commodore 64 now.

Tbh I didn't really know what it was at first. Spoilers!!! It's a computer. You can program in BASIC and play retro games and stuff. I've been doing some 'search and it's totally possible to get it up and running in the year of our Lord 2026; I just have a few bits and bobs to get my grubby paws on before I can actually bring the thing to life and bathe my room in its ᴀ ᴇ ꜱ ᴛ ʜ ᴇ ᴛ ɪ ᴄ blue glow.

Here's the current to-do list;

• FOR POWER:

  • Optian A: Commodore 128 Power Brick

    I have the original power supply, but my 'tube 'search leads me to believe it has a low but nonzero chance of frying the whole thing. I will not be takeing such chances. (You live, after all, only 1nce (YLAAOO).) Apparently they had their shit together when they made the later Commodore 128, so I'm gonna try to grab the C128 power supply from my grandpa (along with, perhaps more critically, my beloved water bottle that I left there also. DUAL PURPOSE TRIP. EFFICIENCY.)

  • Optian B: Modern Power Brick

    IF THERE EXISTS NO SUCH OBJECT IN MY GRANDFATHER'S POSSESSION SOMEHOW. Or more likely if he says he'll "use it at some point." Then I can just turn around, fork over $60 to the Amazon daemon that follows me around everywhere, endure its torturous laughter, and obtain a modern (i.e. non-exploding) power supply.
• FOR VIDEO:

  • 5-PIN DIN → RCA

    Need to convert the freak video output to something less arcane. There's this cute doodad designed specifically for this purpose that you can slap on its ass that gives it some more normal ports (pictured). (its a good thing I decided to become a blogger cuz when doing this part i realized I ordered the wrong one (8 pin), my guy only has 5 holes. cancelled. corrected.)

  • RCA → HDMI

    Then RCA can be converted to HDMI for easy compatibility with any modern monitor, including the $8 one I jsut got at DI (dessert industries), the other day, for this purpose, .
    • Note: CRTs are beautiful its true... (shout out to BJG's "CRT Time" where he displays his finished pixelart on CRT that shit is such delectable eye candy) maybe one day. When I have more space

So yea. The video cables are ordered, I'm just waiting on the grandpa visit. (I tried texting him but the only record of his existence in my phone is a single text from him from 5 years ago so idk... I guess I'll call him...) Maybe Paul will come with me.

Oh yeah and he also gave me the floppy disk drive that goes with it, (as large as the computer itself btw,) but as far as I know it'll just be easier to get doodad #1 listed below for loading shit onto it.

BONUS. THE FUTURE??

• Object to transfer files from our space-age information storage technology (SD card) to whatever the fuck the C64 does (idk but isn't it cool how modern technology sort of "contains" all past technology like new shit can still easily communicate with old computers we just have to dumb it down to their level)
• Joystick?
• Controllers?
